Some Frequently Asked Questions answered by Roisin:-
I’m not interested in learning self-defense but like the sound of the first two workshops, can I attend those?
Absolutely yes! Though I would encourage you to stay for the third session and the sharing circle at the end as well. These workshops are an opportunity to get to know yourself better; to learn about managing boundaries, stress management and proportionate response. I actually wasn’t looking for a marital arts or self-defense class when I started studying Systema and yet somehow, two years later I am still thoroughly enjoying training several times per week. When most people think of marital arts, they think of practicing being in conflict and aggressive physical contact but actually what we are training is sensitivity, how to navigate the freeze response and how to move better for health, vitality and longevity. It just so happens that the quickest ways to identify and train some of these skills are in close proximity to others.
I’m not big into confrontation – will it be scary?
It is only as scary as the degree of stress; physical, emotional and pyschological tension that you inherently bring to any of the situations in your life. The skills you will learn on this day of workshops will inevitably allow you to minimise the stresses that you carry into other areas and aspects of your daily life.
What if I join the third workshop and I really don’t like it?
That’s no problem at all. You are invited to sit out at any point in time – learning to recognise and enforce your individual boundaries is a huge part of this work. You will be invited to “ease into discomfort” – a small measure of challenge in a safe environment can be very healthy, but the measure of that is entirely at your own discretion and subject to change across the day. You can learn a lot from these lessons by simply observing, or taking a walk and practicing some of the earlier breathing and softening techniques.
Do I need to be super fit and/ or strong to participate?
Not at all. The activities can be tailored to meet a variety of abilities and one of the very cool things about this training method is that everyone trains together – there’s no such a thing as beginner and advanced classes; just deeper and deeper levels of understanding and application of core fundamental principles.
If you have any particular debilitating injuries or specific accessibility requirements, please do reach out in advance so we can discuss how it would be possible to meet your needs.
Do I need any specialist equipment?
No. You’re welcome to bring a yoga mat for you own comfort if you prefer but other than that, you already have everything you need to be able to participate in these sessions.
